Antique Furniture Care

Antique furniture usually requires extra care than regular furniture. Here are a few things to keep in mind if you have antique furniture in the house or plan to buy antique furniture.

* Avoid placing anitque furniture in direct sunlight because ultraviolet can damage antique furniture and degrade the old finish and wood. Curtains or shades can be used to block direct sunlight.

* Don’t put antique furniture next to heating or air conditioning vents, fireplaces or stoves. Extra heat can loosen the glue joints.

* Avoid placing antique furniture in humid places. Humidity can loosen the glue joints and lead mold growth. A dehumidifier can be used to maintain the appropriate humidity.

* Use furniture paste wax to maintain the finish of antique furniture. The wax can protect antique furniture from moisture and dust.

* Use a soft and lint free cloth on weekly basis to clean antique furniture. Dampen the cloth slightly to prevent scratches when dusting.

If you go on antique show or maybe a yard sale and purchase some antique funiture, be careful when moving antique furniture to your home. If it is a large piece, always lift it and don’t drag across the floor. And if you are buying an antique table, always carry it by the apron or legs instead of the top. Marble tops, mirros and glass should be laid vertically when being transported.

If you are not sure the proper care for your antique furniture, you can consult with the professional.
